I struggled for quite a while when I was first learning Photoshop. How it Works
lynda.com is a membership based learning environment. Memberships start at just $25 for a month to month subscription. Substantial discounts are available if you choose to subscribe annually. As a member you have immediate access to lynda’s large selection of videos. Searching for the right courses is a breeze. You can search by topic or by a specific piece of software. The entire listing of courses that meet your description is then displayed for you to choose from. Generally there is a handful (often times way more than a handful) of courses available for a specific piece of software or topic of interest. Clicking on the name of each course will give you an overview of what that course teaches as well as the length of the course determined by how many minutes or hours worth of training video there is. The topics in the courses are broken down by sections just like chapters in a book. Each section contains several videos. The individual videos are kept relatively short, anywhere from two to fifteen minutes. I found this to be an excellent way to learn as even complex subjects are kept short enough to be manageable. Also, if you only have fifteen or twenty minutes you have time to watch the next video or two in the series. It’s amazing how much you can learn in only a few minutes.
The instruction itself is fantastic. The instructors are all experts in their fields and are passionate about their subjects. Most importantly the instructors know how to teach. This is important because not all those who know how to do also know how to teach. In every course I’ve taken I’ve found lynda.com’s instructors to be excellent teachers as well as being extremely knowledgeable.
While the high quality of the video and audio in the courses is excellent, what really impresses me are the various tools given for the user to access the course information. lynda.com seems to be very aware that everyone learns differently and they’ve given plenty of options for the way one can approach the information. First you can choose to go through each course from beginning to end. I’ve done several courses in this manner and find it an especially effective way to approach a topic that I’m interested in but know very little about. For subjects that I am more familiar with, such as Photoshop, I may choose to skip topics within a course that I know quite well and jump to the more advanced techniques that I’m seeking. Either way I have often found myself needing to refer back to something I learned in a course but have not become proficient with yet. In this case I can go back to re-watch just the video in the course I need to see. Sometimes I can’t remember what specific video I need to refer to or don’t want to scan through a longer video to find the one bit of information that I need. lynda.com has thought of this as well. They provide a text search of the entire course so I can quickly find the one or two sentences in a course that I need to refer to. Incredible! I can’t tell how much time this feature has saved me. Last but not least, lynda.com has recently come out with a free iphone application that members can use to stream their lessons no matter where they are.
Conclusion
In the last year using lynda.com I have learned nearly half a dozen software programs from scratch and increased my knowledge of several others that I already knew. I even saved myself $150 by NOT upgrading to the latest version of a piece of software I use because lynda.com offered a tutorial outlining all of the new features and I realized that I didn’t really need any of them. I’ve spent countless dollars on books and workshops that, although useful, haven’t taught me half as much as what I’ve learned in the last year with lynda.com’s help. I’m convinced that lynda.com provides the best training around!
